The Unreal universe
(Last modified: 2008-01-24)
Introduction
Good morning!
It is
2008-10-08, 03:49:28 (@117), Wednesday, week 41.
This section of the site is about the Unreal games, although I cover UT2004 the most extensively.
For information on the original UT I recommend visiting the
UT Bible,
which though no longer updated, features information relevant to the newer games as well.
UMODs
UMODs are files that can be installed by an Unreal games' setup.exe in the System subfolder of Windows systems.
UMODs are for Unreal and UT,
U2MODs for U2,
UT2MODs for UT2003
(version 2166 and higher), and UT4MODs are for UT2004.
Double clicking the UMOD file should automatically start the installer.
If that doesn't work, something went wrong with Windows' file associations.
Follow these instructions to work around, or fix the problem.
Here I assume UT4MODs aren't working, you have UT2004
installed in D:\Games\UT2004\,
and want to install a File.ut4mod from D:\Files\.
To work around the problem, run the following command:
D:\Games\UT2004\System\Setup.exe install D:\Files\File.ut4mod
Simply substitute the first parts of the 2 paths for where your copies are.
To fix the problem (assuming the same path to the game) you need to get into Windows' file associations menu,
and add the UMOD extension back:
The extensions should be UT4MOD,
which is a UT2004 Module,
and it should open the files with application
D:\Games\UT2004\System\Setup.exe install "%1".
Leave the rest as default.

more secrets
Unreal II: The Awakening
- When you board the Atlantis the first time, before letting Aida tell you your mission objective,
go up the ladder, turn left, and open the hatch.
In there will be Seagoat, which you need to talk to.
Say "Spam!" 3 times, and say "Spam", after which the Seagoat will reply: "Abe Lincoln will be pleased!".
Now if you hear the mission objective, you will see Abe Lincoln sending the distress call.
- On the planet (...) shoot Abe Lincoln's head hidden in the blue light on the antenna on the right of the building, and it will grow, and laugh.

More Easter eggs,
more secrets
First of all, to see the names of the locations, you need to be in a team game.
After that, a TeamSay will show your location, between brackets, after your name.
You can also TeamSay %L to give a little bit more information on your current location.
General
- The monitors in DOM, CTF have numbers on them that are car models, such as "4AGZE". (Check if this is true.)
- Gears of War cogs can be found in several levels because the titles were developed around the same time.
- Enigma (team "The Corrupt") was inspired by Maria from Metropolis
and the Statue of Liberty.

- Cyclops (team "The Corrupt") was inspired by the look of steam trains
Maps
- Asbestos (DM-Asbestos) -
Up the FlakLift, near the LightningGun, go up a ramp on either site, and shoot the ceiling in either alcove a few times.
Quickly go down the ramp, and proceed through the hallway, and you should see CliffyB's face exposed from the pipes for a short while.
You might need to shoot the ceiling a few times, and I think it only works once.
- Compressed - Lift jump, secret room
- Citadel (CTF-Citadel) -
Fire a Redeemer missile at the blue light in the sky above you. Now the spiked balls around you should have changed textures.
Everytime you do this they will cycle through: chrome, mechanical, the original metal.
- Skyline - Ion Painter
- Goatse.cx and Tubgirl references
- Junkyard (DOM-Junkyard.ut2) -
Enter the Blue spawn area, Lost in the Junk, go right and find the A-sign.
Look up, and you'll find a dubious "Melted pipe".
- Convoy - Nexus missiles feature CliffyB's name
- RobotFactory - The Nexus missiles carry CliffyB's name
- Desolation - art by level author
- Serpentine - Quake map
- Deck17,
Curse,
Face
(Classic)- Appear in more Unreal games
- Icetomb -
Inspired by Graves's Ice Palace from the James Bond film "Die Another Day"

- Bridge Of Fate
(BR) - Inspired by LotR film
- Grassyknoll -
Named after the "grassy knoll" of Dealey Plaza whence John F. Kennedy was shot.

- Junkyard - Inspired by Scraphead Challenge
- Tokara Forest - Named to sound like "toke" due to its theme
- Rankin - Name from image found online for inspiration
- FallenCity (other city map?) - Road signs with names
Unreal Tournament III
Since the game isn't out yet, things are still changing, and the following things may not be in the final game.
Check thread for more
- The Link Gun
has "great green" written on it in Aurebesh.

- The Necris Darkwalker
looks similar to the Tripod's in Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" film.

- Some signs
in a city map show Mortal Kombat's Scorpion's fatality.
Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict
- One of the combatants is Mortal Kombat's Raiden. Raiden also mentions Johnny Cage in one of his taunts.
- The "Coup de Grace" is inspired by Mortal Kombat's "Fatality".
- Raiden's Coup de Grace combo is the same as his Fatality combo in Mortal Kombat. (???)
- Instead of the usual announcer, it's possible to select Mortal Kombat's announcer; Shao Kahn.
